Pentagon Secure Bypass

Following the attack on the US Pentagon building on September 11, 2001, my company, Dewberry, and Facchina Construction were selected to deliver a design/ build scheme to relocate a 1.5 kilometer section of six-lane highway away from the Pentagon building.  As a member of a three person landscape architecture design team, I collaborated in the development of the winning concept and provided planting and hardscape design, construction detailing and site grading.

Our proposal, which included relocation of a section of highway, impacted a historic parade ground and created a barrier between the Pentagon building and its parking fields north of the highway.  To mitigate these impacts, our landscape concept proposed recessing the highway, screening it from view with hedge plantings, and spanning the highway with two elegant pedestrian bridge links.  The landscape design which was required to adhere to strict security requirements, was key component of the design team's winning proposal.
