Janelia Farm Research Campus
Located on the suburban outskirts of Washington DC on a bluff overlooking the Potomac River, Howard Hughes Medical Institute's research campus at Janelia Farm, is a state-of-the-art 50,000 square meter research and conference facility with short and long term housing, child care services, and support facilities. As part of a four person landscape architecture design team, I collaborated on design and construction plans throught the 280 hectare campus, delivering an award winning landscape.
Along with comprehensive planting and grading plans, I contributed to detailed construction plans for an executive garden and cafe patio, arrival courtyard, director's manor house courtyard, child care center playground with splashpad, housing block gathering spaces and playground, bluestone plazas and walkways throughout the campus core, site lighting, lake edge plantings, and over 5-miles of woodland and meadow trails. Our naturalized planting scheme for the grounds and the building's 16,000 square meter green roof is designed for seasonal variation and uses native species that require no fertilizer or pesticides, reducing the facilities impact on the environment. Locally quarried stone is used throughout the campus walkways and walls.
